About Grandmothers for Peace- Maryland Chapter
Maryland Grandmothers for Peace is one of the many chapters of Grandmothers for Peace International, the organization founded in 1982 by a California grandmother, Barbara Wiedner. Beginning at the height of the Cold War as opposition to nuclear proliferation and the arms race, Grandmothers for Peace International continues Mrs. Wiedner’s vision of a world without weapons and war but instead a world that seeks the peaceful resolution of international conflicts.
Maryland Grandmothers for Peace is a grassroots organization of volunteers. We began our chapter in early 2003. Grandmothers for Peace is not just for grandmothers. We are open to all who share our vision of peace instead of war to resolve conflict. Maryland Grandmothers for Peace does not advocate any particular political candidate. And we support our children and grandchildren serving our country in the armed forces.
We believe that we can make the world the kind of place we want for our children and grandchildren and the generations to come. We are active on many fronts: striving to protect our right to vote and to have our votes counted; participating in demonstrations; sponsoring film showings; establishing a “presence” at community events; writing letters to elected officials and newspapers; and creating art and music, including a full one hour CD “Waging Peace for Children and Other Living Things”.
We meet every third Sunday of the month at the Owen Brown Interfaith Center in Columbia. (Please double check on the calendar – on occasion we may decide to participate as a group in a special activity in lieu of the meeting.) We have great conversation, talk about our exploits, and make plans for more! Please join us.
